Olympic Day: the pleasure and joy of getting together again

After months of uncertainty, the Monegasque Olympic Committee sent out a strong message, in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II accompanied by Crown Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella.

This year, Olympic Day (traditionally celebrated on 23rd June) took on a particular dimension. Whilst the health crisis and repeated episodes of lockdown over the last few months have had a direct impact on the sports sector, both for leisure and competition, the gradual opening of stadiums, sports centres, swimming pools and gyms has given fresh impetus to physical and sports activities.  After a year of forced rest, the Monegasque Olympic Committee welcomed CM1 students from the Principality to the Espace Saint Antoine. Just one month before the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games, the message sent out was strong. An event in the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee, accompanied by Crown Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella.

Young enthusiasts, full of hope

The Olympic Day theme – move, learn and discover – naturally targets a younger audience.  It is in this spirit that the COM decided to provide all primary schools with a “Kids’ Athletics” bag. A quality tool which, together with the appropriate teaching materials, will make it possible to develop the activities and to (re)discover a wide variety of skills: running, jumping, throwing, balancing… Enthusiastic and diligent, the Monegasque students were delighted to meet up again wearing their outfits in colours representing the continents that symbolise the Olympic rings (as well as white for Tokyo 2020), and proud to be taking part in the five workshops where they gave of their best. With of course the underlying theme of the three fundamental values of Olympism: friendship, respect and excellence.

A demonstration which the Sovereign followed most attentively. Jacques and Gabriella also had a go in some of the workshops. “As the school year draws to an end, the situation is at long last improving. Once again, we can run, swim and share enjoyable moments during physical exertion . The Monegasque Olympic Committee can but welcome this upturn which was requested from the Government of Monaco by all the Olympic Federations  in November 2020” pointed out H.E. Mrs Yvette Lambin-Berti, COM Secretary General.

All the children, budding future champions, left with a personalised certificate for their participation in the event, a medal, two pre-launch Tokyo pins and a water flask.
