Presentation of the Monegasque delegation to the press

1st Winter Youth Olympic Games Innsbruck 2012

On 9th January at the Fairmont Hotel, the 3 athletes selected for the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games were presented to the press in the presence of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, the Minister of the Interior, the representative of the President of the National Council, members of the Monegasque Olympic Committee, as well as several other personalities.

A video, produced by Mr Stéphan Maggi, showcased to both guests and representatives the goals of these Games and the serious preparation work of our young athletes.

 

1st Winter Youth Olympic Games Innsbruck 2012

The 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games took place in Innsbruck, Austria, from 13th to 22nd January.

After the highlights of the Opening Ceremony, Mr Bryan Pelassy (alpine skiing)

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
and Messrs Rudy Rinaldi and Jérémy Torre (2-man bob) defended the Principality's colours the following day. 

They were accompanied by their coaches Messrs David Plassais for the bobsleigh, and Jean-Luc Mari for skiing, as well as the Chef de Mission, Mr Sébastien Gattuso. Mr Stéphan Maggi, the press officer, provided a daily report of events in word and image.GATTUSO.   bob a 2

 

The 2-man bob team were awarded an eye-catching bronze medal.

 

As for our young skier, he competed in the Super G, Super Combined and Giant Slalom events, in which he ranked 38th, 30th and 33rd position respectively out of a total 55 participants.

           

 

 

  Reception at the Prince's Palace in honour of the YOG Athletes

On 30th April, a reception was held at the Prince's Palace in honour of the Monegasque delegation taking part in the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games.

H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince presented the Monegasque Olympic Committee's bronze medal to the two bob-sleighers, as well as the Organising Committee's diploma to the three sportsmen and the managers for their participation in the first edition of these Games.

The Medal of the City was presented to the three athletes by Mr Georges Marsan, the Mayor of Monaco.  

 

General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees

Moscow, 13th to 17th April

The 18th General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees followed by the 2nd World Olympic Sport Convention were held in Moscow from 13th to 17th April.

The General Assembly elected Sheik Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, President of the Asian Association of Olympic Committees, as President of the Association of National Olympic Committees for the period 2012-2014.

Two representatives of the Monegasque Olympic Committee attended the meeting.

During the assembly, reports on the London 2012, Sochi 2014, Rio 2016 and Pyeong Chang 2018 Olympic Games were presented, in addition to the 2nd Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer in 2016.

The discussions also focused on :

-  the key role of the National Olympic Committees in anti-doping and illegal betting,

-  the development of popular sport at local level,

-  the role of sport as a vehicle for progress both socially and educationally.

The Candidate Cities bidding to host the Summer Olympic Games in 2020 were presented: Istanbul, Tokyo, Doha, Baku and Madrid.

2nd World Sport Convention

Furthermore, the second World Olympic Sport Convention brought together the representatives of the National Olympic Committees and Government representatives in charge of sport.

The discussions were focused on:

-  the development and promotion of sport for youth

-  the stabilisation and development of sport in the current international economic climate

-  the establishment of cooperation between the National Olympic Committees and Governments for the positive development of high-level sport and the Olympic Movement

-  the protection and strengthening of sporting values to combat increasing doping and illegal betting pressures.

 

Pre-registration delegation meeting for the 30th Olympic Games in London 2012

The pre-registration meeting for the delegation was scheduled on 25th April, an important step for our participation in the London Olympic Games.

londres 2Mr Sébastien Gattuso, in his capacity as Chef de Mission, took part.

The London 2012 Organising Committee was thus able to collect the information necessary to meet the needs of the Monegasque delegation and provide appropriate services to our team during the Games.

 

 

 

33rd Seminar of the European Olympic Committees

26th to 28th April in Budapest (Hungary)

The 33rd Seminar of European Olympic Committees was held in Budapest from 26th to 28th April.

The National Olympic Committees of Europe shared their experiences and points of view on the dossiers based on their day-to-day activities.RP

After the official opening, work began under the leadership of Mr Raffaele Pagnozzi, Secretary General of the European Olympic Committees.

The London 2012 Games and the preparations for the Sotchi 2014 Winter Games were examined during the plenary session.

Work then continued with two workshops focused this year on two highly sensitive topics to advance the world of sport:

- Identifying talent

- New means of communication and social networks.

The International Committee's Fair Play awards were presented during the seminar's evening closing event.

 

3rd General Assembly of the Francophone Association of National Olympic Committees

25th and 26th May in Quebec

The 3rd General Assembly of the Francophone Association of National Olympic Committees took place from 25th to 26th May in Quebec (Canada).  michaela

In addition to the representatives of the Francophone National Olympic Committees, several personalities including the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Grand Témoin de la Francophonie at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, took part in the discussions.

lord sebastienTogether with Lord Sebastien Coe, Chairman of LOCOG, she signed a convention on the use of French at the London 2012 Games.

This General Assembly also provided the opportunity to announce officially Monaco's membership to this Association.

Several topics were broached:

- The Games of La Francophonie (Mr Bernard Maccario, Director General of the National Committee of the Games of La Francophonie, gave a PowerPoint presentation on the next Games which will be held in Nice from 6th to 15th September 2013)

- the Francophone sports associations

- the place of the French language within the sports movement and the prospects for action within the context of the 2012 Olympics in London

 


 

 

 

 

Technical Commission and Executive Committee Meetings for the 15th Games of the Small States of Europe on 8th June in Luxembourg

The Technical Commission and Executive Committee Meetings for the 15th Games of the Small States of Europe were held in Luxembourg on 8th June.

schoe schoeMr Jean-Pierre Schoebel, President of the Technical Commission, and Ms Solange Ragazzoni, member of the Monegasque Olympic Committee attended.

Examination of the technical manual for the future Games in Luxembourg prompted the Executive Committee of the Games of the Small States of Europe to approve several modifications.

Following these meetings, on 9th June, the two Monegasque representatives took part in the celebrations marking the Centenary of the Luxembourg Olympic Committee.

 

 

Year 12 S3 students from Lycée Albert I meet athletes on the shortlist

for the London 2012 Olympic Games on 7th June

LyceeAs part of the school twinning programme with London 2012, the athletes preselected for the London Olympic Games, together with Mr Sébastien Gattuso, met Year 12 S3 students from the International Section of Lycée Albert I.

The dialogue and socialising between athletes and students enabled this class to draw up a comprehensive report for their fellow British students.

 

 

 

Meeting at the Ecole des Révoires

On the occasion of the end of year party at the Ecole des Révoires on 12th June, the athletes pre-selected for the London Olympic Games met students at the School to talk to them about their sport and their experience.

On the sports field in the Princesse Antoinette Park, the school had a photo taken for the occasion with the 353 students, grouped together according to the colour of their tee-shirts so as to represent the Olympic rings.

  

Olympic Day, 20th June

The 4th FANB "Sport-Health Environment" Challenge was chosen by the Monegasque Olympic Committee as part of the Olympic Day celebrations on 20th June.

Involving orienteering activities on sports and general knowledge in the Fontvieille Gardens for Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils, the event brought together 382 students, who all received a cap, a tee-shirt and a certificate from the International Olympic Committee.

journe olympiqueThe FANB School organised a competition on the day for the creation of a mascot, whose production costs were covered by the Monegasque Olympic Committee.

The winning entry was by Miss Katherine Tourlan (Year 7 C) who received a prize from the Monegasque Olympic Committee.

H.S.H. Princess Charlene honoured this event with her presence.

 

Presentation of the delegation

for the London 2012 Olympic Games to the press, 12th July

drapeauOn 12th July, the Excelsior Lounge at the Hermitage Hotel provided the setting for the presentation to the press of the 6 athletes selected for the London 2012 Olympic Games, in the presence of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, H.S.H. Princess Charlene and various key figures.

This was the occasion to watch a video clip produced by Mr Stéphan Maggi, which presented all the members of the delegation and the commitment of the athletes during their preparation.

H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince announced the name of the flag bearer: Miss Angélique Trinquier.

The creation of the Maison de Monaco in London was also officially announced.

 

30th Summer Olympic Games - London 2012

The 30th Summer Olympic Games took place in London from 27th July to 12th August.

6 Monegasque athletes competed in the event: Miss Angélique Trinquier (Swimming), Messrs Yann Siccardi (Judo) Brice Etes (Athletics), Mathias Raymond (Rowing), Damien Desprat-Lerale (Sailing) and Hervé Banti (Triathlon).

Mr Sébastien Gattuso fulfilled the role of Head of Mission with great efficiency and dedication.

The Press Officer, Mr Stéphan Maggi, gave a daily report concerning the stay of the members of the Monegasque delegation to the local press and the MOC website with documented articles.

Likewise, a cameraman from the Monaco Press Centre followed our delegation. The quality of the work and the coordination of these two individuals, in sometimes difficult conditions, are worth mention.

The Welcome Ceremony was held in the presence of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince in the afternoon of 25th July within the Olympic Village: an exchange of gifts between the Chef de Mission and the Village Mayor, Monegasque national anthem, the raising of the flag and a short local show were all on the programme.

On 26th July, the traditional dinner hosted by the Monegasque Olympic Committee took place at the Maison de Monaco in London in the presence of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, H.S.H. Princess Charlene, H.E. Ms Evelyne Genta, Ambassador of Monaco to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as many other key figures.

 

The Opening Ceremony took place on 27th July at the Olympic Stadium.ouverture

Throughout the duration of the Games, the Maison de Monaco in London proved to be extremely popular. Managed by Ms Elisabeth Ritter-Moati, Director General - Investment and Promotion, at the Chamber of Economic Development of Monaco. Young Monegasque volunteers also helped to ensure the smooth running of the establishment, especially with regard to the welcome desk.

On 28th July, H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince welcomed all the members of the Olympic family to the Maison de Monaco, including: the members of the International Olympic Committee, the Presidents and Secretary Generals of the National Olympic Committees as well as the Presidents of the International Federations, on the occasion of a reception organised by the Monegasque Olympic Committee.

On 31st July, the Presidents and Secretary Generals of the Small States of Europe Olympic Committees were also invited to dinner.

During their stay, T.S.H. the Sovereign Prince and Princess Charlene visited the Olympic Village. This provided the opportunity to visit the apartments of the Monegasque delegation and to chat with the athletes. The topics of conservation included the Opening Ceremony, their first impressions of the organisation and the atmosphere at the Games.

Concerning the results of our athletes:

  • In swimming, in the 100 m backstroke event, Ms Angélique Trinquier broke her personal record of 1'10"79.
  • In judo, in the -60 kg category, Mr Yann Siccardi eliminated in the 1st round the Yemeni, ranking world 55th. Unfortunately, he fell during the second contest against the Russian, ranking world 5th and future Gold medallist. Nonetheless, he ranked 9th.
  • In rowing (Skiff) Mr Mathias Raymond came in admirably at 18th position out of 33, reaching the Final C.
  • In sailing (Laser) Mr Damien Desprat-Lerale came 46th out of 49 participants in the final ranking.
  • For the Triathlon events, Mr Hervé Banti finished 49th out of 55, 6'15 after the winner.
  • Finally, in athletics, Mr Brice Etes took part in the 800 m series.

A special mention should be given to the generous contribution of the Louis Vuitton company, which designed the parade uniform, and the agreement signed between the Monegasque Olympic Committee and NIKE.

The Closing Ceremony was held on 12th August at the Olympic Stadium. On this occasion, Damien Desprat-Lerale carried the flag of Monaco.

The 23rd edition of Sportel took place from 15th to 18th October.

Traditionally associated with the Prix du Livre Sportif Illustré (Illustrated Sports Book Award), for which an increasing number and variety of books contend, the Monegasque Olympic Committee awarded its prize to The Story of Swimming by Ms Susie Parr, a book dedicated to the history and evolution of swimming as well as the benefits of this sport.

 

Chefs de Mission Seminar

Mediterranean Games, Mersin 2013

mersinThe Chefs de Mission Seminar for the 17th edition of the Mediterranean Games in Mersin 2013 took place from 17th to 20th October.

Messrs Raymond Gnutti, Chef de Mission, and Sébastien Gattuso, Deputy Chef de Mission, were therefore able to meet the various officials in charge of the organisation, to see how work has progressed, and to visit the various competition venues and the Olympic Villages, which despite the late re-attribution of the Games due to the withdrawal of the city of Volos in Greece, for financial difficulties, were already well advanced.

The 8 Villages are modern and well-equipped. They are distributed over 2 different cities: Adana where the rowing and equitation events will take place and Mersin, where all the other events will be held.

 

Chefs de Mission Seminar

Winter Olympic Youth Festival - Brasov 2013

The Chefs de Mission Seminar for the Winter Olympic Youth Festival - Brasov 2013 took place from 15th to 18th November.

To the great satisfaction of all the participants, the Organising Committee provided detailed and comprehensive information concerning the event.

 

No Finish Line

17th to 25th November

The 13th edition of the No Finish Line was held from 17th to 25th November. 23 Monegasque athletes took part: Along the harbour, different generations of Olympians not only proudly sported the colours of the Committee, but also renewed friendships between fellow athletes.

In all, they totalled 344 laps, covering 490 kms.

 

8th International Olympic Committee Conference on Sport, Culture and Education in Amsterdam

from 25th to 27th November 2012

The International Olympic Committee, in partnership with the United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture hosted the 8th World Conference on Sport, Education and Culture from 25th to 27th November.

H.E. Mr Gilles Tonelli, a member of the Monegasque Olympic Committee, attended the event together with over 500 representatives.gilles

The focus of the conference was "Olympism powered by youth and education"

The main topics discussed:

- the role of the family and educators in disseminating the Olympic values among young athletes,

- the obligation to include physical education programmes in school curricula,

- making authorities aware that the availability of sports facilities begins with adequate urban planning,

- the positive role the social networks can play in order to encourage youth to practise a sport.

- sport as an important tool in promoting social integration,

- the introduction and strengthening of educational programmes for athletes in order to provide them with skills to boost their professional career after high-level sport.

 

41st EOC General Assembly

7th and 8th December in Rome (Italy)

From 7th to 8th December, the 41st European Olympic Committees’ General Assembly took place in Rome.

The reports of the Organising Committees of the Olympic Games in Sochi 2014, Rio 2016 and Pyeongchang 2018 were presented together with those of the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing 2014 and Lillehammer 2016.

In addition, the Lithuanian swimmer, Ruta Meilutyte, was named best European young athlete of the year.jeune athlete

Created in memory of the late President of the Polish NOC and member of the EOC Executive Committee, this prize encourages young athletes to pursue a career in high-level sports and inspires future generations to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

remise palmesIt is to be noted that during the first evening, Lord Sebastian Coe was decorated with the EOC Order of Merit and the European Olympic Laurels were also awarded.

The 2nd day's work was marked by the vote concerning the organisation of the 1st European Games approved by 38 for, 8 against and 2 abstentions.

The 1st edition of these European Games will therefore be organised in Baku in 2015. The precise dates are still to be defined, but most probably the event will take place in the spring or early summer and will feature fifteen or so sports.

The other important decision concerns the designation of the organising cities for the Summer and Winter European Youth Olympic Festivals 2017: Györ (Hungary) for the Summer and Sarajevo for the Winter were elected.

The next General Assembly will again take place in Rome.

International Olympic Committee Campaign

givingFinally, following an appeal by the International Olympic Committee, in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Monegasque Olympic Committee took part in the clothes collection campaign "Giving is Winning".

All the sports garments and casual wear in good condition collected were distributed to the most deprived people, especially youth, in refugee camps worldwide. This enabled sports activities to be set up and their quality of life to be improved.
