GSSE Iceland 1997

 

From 2nd to 7th June 1997, the 7th Games of the Small States of Europe were held in Iceland. Situated very close to the Arctic Polar Circle, its capital, Reykjavik, was the meeting point for the eight delegations competing in the 7th edition.

 

Under the leadership of Ms Yvette Lambin-Berti, the Monegasques had 58 athletes and 30 escorts.

 

   The Monegasque officials and athletes enter the Laugardalur municipal stadium, following the standard bearer Michel Arnoux.

 

In spite of the extremely difficult weather conditions, the number of medals won was a success:

  • 7 gold: 2 in gymnastics for Laétitia Begué, on the uneven bars and Gaëlle Trotebas on the beam; 2 in judo for Thierry Vatrican and Fabien Gerace; 1 in swimming for Christophe Verdino in the 200m breaststroke; 1 in tennis for Sébastien Graeff in the men’s singles; 1 in sailing for Damien Desprat-Lerale, in a Laser,
  • 6 silver: 4 in swimming; 1 in athletics; 1 in gymnastics.
  • 14 bronze: 6 in swimming; 4 in judo; 2 in tennis; 1 in athletics; 1 in sailing,

 

With a total 27 medals, Monaco found itself for the 6th time running in 4th place in the country rankings.
