Three Monegasque athletes compete at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games

On Tuesday at the Monaco Yacht Club, H.S.H. Prince Albert II, President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee, presented the athletes who will be defending the Principality’s colours at the 24th Winter Olympic Games in Beijing (4-20 February).

Sotchi 2014

For its ninth consecutive participation in the Winter Olympic Games, Monaco sent six athletes wearing red and white to Sotchi from 6th to 23rd February:

• Alpine skiing: Alexandra Coletti, Olivier Jenot and Arnaud Alessandria

• 2-man bobsleigh: Patrice Servelle, Sébastien Gattuso, substitute, Rudy Rinaldi

At the opening ceremony of the Games, in the presence of T.S.H. Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene, Mr Paul Masseron, Minister for the Interior and H.E. Ms Yvette Lambin-Berti, Secretary General of the Monegasque Olympic Committee. For Olivier Jenot, the flag bearer, it was a very emotional moment: "Already one week ago at the presentation of the athletes when Prince Albert announced that I was the one who would be bearing the flag I could not believe it..."

Vancouver Olympics

 

 

The 21st Winter Olympic Games took place from 12th to 26th February 2010 in Vancouver (Canada).

 

 

 

3 Monegasque athletes with their chief of mission, Jacques Pastor, took part in these Games  

  • Alexandra COLETTI (Alpine skiing), the flag bearer leading the delegation at the opening ceremony

Following the Welcoming Ceremony, a reception was hosted by the Consul of Monaco in Vancouver, Mr Jacques Becker, for the Monegasque delegation 

 

  

During the Games, H.S.H. Prince Albert II took part in the Conference on the French-speaking world.

He also had a discussion with the three athletes during which they spoke of the Opening Ceremony and the first Games.
 
 
 
 
The results obtained : 

In skiing :

  • In the downhill, Alexandra finished in 24th place on a very difficult Crickside slope
  • In the Super Combined, 19th position
  • In the Super G, 25th position out of 53 participants.

Bosleigh :

 

  • Patrice Servelle and Sébastien Gattuso finished 19th out of 30 on a dangerous track.

On 21st February, the athletes, officials and technical staff joined H.S.H. Prince Albert II for the Olympic Committee Dinner.

Salt Lake Olympics

 

 

From 8th to 24th February 2002, the Rice-Eccles Stadium welcomed two thousand three hundred and ninety nine athletes carrying seventy-seven banners. The XIX Olympic Winter Games were marked by an increase in the number of events featured on the Olympic programme (78) with the return of the skeleton and the introduction of the women’s bobsleigh.

After an official address by President George Bush, the Monegasque delegation marched past 55 000 spectators including Ms Yvette Lambin-Berti and Mr Robert Colle (President of the Monegasque Ski Federation

 

 

 

H.S.H. Hereditary Prince Albert, taking part for the 5th time in the Games, leads the Monegasque delegation in the company of Jean-François Calmes (standard bearer), Patrice Servelle, Sébastien Gattuso and Charles Oula

 

After the appearance of the Olympic flag with its five coloured interlaced rings on a white background, carried by a representative of the 5 continents, the Olympic Torch arrived (after travelling 21 500 km and with 11 500 relay runners) in the joint hands of two gold medallists in figure skating, Peggy Fleming (Grenoble 1968) and Scott Hamilton (Sarajevo 1984) who passed it over for the final blaze to the American hockey team, authors of “miracle on ice” (referring to their victory over the invincible Russians!) and gold medallists in Lake Placid in 1980.

 

 

 

The Olympic flame burns in the cauldron of the Rice-Eccles Stadium.

 

Events in which the Monegasque athletes took part :

  • In the Monegasque 4-man bobsleigh event, driven by Prince Albert with Patrice Servelle, Sébastien Gattuso and Charles Oula aboard, the crew had a great fright in the third heat. A highly skilled athlete, Prince Albert II did not lose heart and returned to the race in the 4th heat when Jean-François Calmes, the substitute, stepped in and finished in 28th position out of 33 competitors.
  • In the 2-man bobsleigh event, the Monegasque pilot Patrice Servelle and Sébastien Gattuso achieved a good result finishing 22nd out of 39 competitors.
